My Successful Self-Taught Journey: Proof That Breaking Into the Tech Industry Is Possible for Anyone

My academic path began in Actuarial Science, shifted to Mechanical Engineering, and culminated in a Bachelor’s in Environmental Science. Discovering a passion for data in my final year, I embarked on a self-taught journey. Despite not having a formal IT degree, I joined a Data Analytics Startup and later a multinational tech company.

  • Faced with limited exposure to the wide array of subjects available.
  • Encountered challenges in choosing between specialization early (in fields like Algorithms or Physics) or pursuing a broader course like Information Systems.
  • Needed to formulate critical questions for university boards, weighing options between public vs. private and local vs. abroad institutions.

Degree Hopping to Success: Environmental Science Journey

  • Explored business subjects for 1-2 semesters, then withdrew.
  • Briefly pursued Actuarial Science for a semester, also withdrew.
  • Ventured into Mechanical Engineering for two years before leaving.
  • Ultimately found my calling and completed a degree in Environmental Science.

Performing in the Tech Sector with no formal tech background

  • MCO Period: Dedicated 3 months to self-taught coding, 13-14 hours daily via YouTube.
  • Outcome: Completed 2 personal projects in 3 months.
  • Experience: Interned at a Data Science Startup, focusing on computer vision, automating financial statements, and learning management systems.
  • Career Progression: Became Asia Retail Partner Solution Lead at Intel, followed by a Business Analyst role at Xsolla.
